As for the audio, I was optimistic about this year after hearing some of the preview clips found online from Nick Hutson as I was hoping we would see each and every ride having their own theme like it used to be when Midnight Syndicate ruled the park. Whilst some rides sounded great, Colossus' station especially which was my favourite, I noticed it was only some the coasters which had theme changes, no other rides across the park had them, so every single flat ride like Rush, Samurai, Vortex etc were playing their regular themes all day and night. As for Amity Cove's playlist across Tidal Wave and Stealth, it sounded identical to the regular one and did not work well at all in my opinion, especially at night. I understand the intentions behind why a FN dedicated playlist was made, but it failed in my view. I could also hear the director voice overs a few times across the park too in a few places. Why is he still being played across a Walking Dead themed Halloween event?

Glad you like Colossus' audio - thanks!

There should be audio playing for Rush and Nemesis Inferno - but there simply wasn't enough time to do everything; we will build on it, I am sure.

Don't know why or where you heard the director - can you let me know?

WWTP is a complete re-write... that's all I have to say about that.  What didn't work?

  2. Merlin offer a way better deal than the Disney annual passes.  We're very lucky to get the 20% discount on everything (alcohol, food, gifts) and everyone in the party can gain from it if only one person in the group has the pass.  Over at Disney only the pass holder is allowed to make use of the 10% (or sometimes 5%) discount.

It should be said that these are premium in price - £6 for steak burger, ~£4 for noodles and £3 for a portion of chips I believe - but this is a reflection of the quality of food.  A nice thing for the park to be trialing in my opinion!

Ha! As always with Merlin parks, compared to the US (Six Flags/Cedar Fair...) this is an absolute bargain.

All Americans I know who go to the parks here are SO impressed with the food offering and pricing - especially Temple at Chessington.

  4. Went to this park for the first time ever at the weekend.

Really well run place; longest queue was 25 minutes (and that was for a thing in Peppa Pig Land).  The Lost Kingdom is lovely and the jeep ride has a nice surprise at the end (you get wetter than Zufari!)

It needs a dark ride, a woodie and proper log flume and rapids ride and then it'll be up there!

The entrance is beautiful and it puts other parks' entrances to shame in this country... the grounds are very well kept and extremely clean - and it was nice not to see adverts for stuff everywhere.  The free parking was nice.

The food needs work (but I think everyone knows that) but it was a really relaxing day all round!

  5. I wouldn't count the VR elements as illusions.

However, Peppers Ghost can't be bought "off-the-shelf", so that whole scene had to be conceived; Paul would've worked on the lighting and the screen angles, as well as the train that looks to be part of the set in the room but is actually a hologram.  He'd have advised on where the audience have to stand (ever notice wherever you stand in the room Derren is looking at you?)

The "few mirrors and chains" is a bit more complicated than that... again the room had to be designed and lit to make it seem like it was hanging by chains.   Illusions are all meant to seem simple - but under the surface, there's always a lot more going on.

The illusion of space in the tube station is also a clever use of mirrors, too.

Paul is a pretty talented guy... he's just done Groundhog Day in town, Matilda, Ghost, Lord of the Rings, live tricks for the Harry Potter films, Svengali and Miracle for DB, most of Dynamo's tricks and the new magic show at Disneyland Paris that's just opened.
