That was a great report Sheepie I'm happy that I wasn't the only one to absolutely adore the new Pooh queue, it's just fantastic. The whole experience feels so much more complete with it. I didn't get to try the new Mansion queue this year but it does look wonderful too. Also, yay for Philarmagic love! It's one of my all-time favourites too - I love the blend of classic Disney characters and songs with the new overall story and modern visuals.I can relate with the magic of character dining... On my first Florida trip back in 2001, we went as a whole family of my sister and both my parents. It was a truly magical trip in every sense - it was such a massive thing to be able to go at a time when we didn't have all that much money, and it really had the Disney effect on us all... Despite some less than savoury relations at home at the time, the entire length of the trip all four of us got along so amazingly, and I can only attribute it to the World. Two of the moments that I remember the most clearly about it were character breakfast in Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary and dinner at the Crystal Palace which, funnily enough, was brought on by need to shelter from a rainstorm! In another classic 'Disney touch', they brought the whole group of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto ect ect as well as the scheduled characters who were the Pooh ones at the time as well I think, because everyone was stranded in there (the storm came much later than usual). We spent about 2 1/2 hours in there, just relaxing, slowly eating and soaking up this amazing experience as all the characters came to our table and played with my sister and I, and took photos. It's moments like these that really make a holiday, and I'd go so far as to say that it was my favourite trip I've had to Orlando for the sheer magic of it all. When you reduce it to the level of individual rides and their pros and cons like we have a tendency to do, something is lost I think. So yeah, amazing memories that will always be with me. I still carry the picture of the four of us at Chef Mickey's in my wallet to this day...And now I'm crying. Cheers

    1. Just because their surname is on the back wall doesn't mean it has anything to do with them. How about movie premiers and celebrities who aren't in the film? Or Sports interviews with brands in the background?2. The only reason I've heard of one of them is because she has a sex tape. I wouldn't know (or care) who the hell they were.

How precisely do you propose a person proves how exaggerations of scale and deviation from the norm alters their own perception of how real something looks?! (now that IS a silly point indeed!!).Too be fair, it would look kinda odd if they had to stick one of the engines out near the tip of the wing to give the clearance. We all know roughly what a plane wing should look like and to deviate well beyond the realms of reality would spoil the point of the effect. Not really that much of a silly point. I think it's gonna look pretty awesome though and would suggest the reason the design includes the outer engine broken and falling away has been done precisely to accommodate the size of the train without making the wing/engine proportions look all weird. Praying for ride sequenced engine fire effects. Mmmmmm, pyrotechnics.

With the money grabbing but fun Warwick Castle behind us, we drove to Alton Towers, the next morning. We had stayed in a Premier Inn at Solihull, so the drive wasn't too far.We arrived around half ten to a fairly quiet car park...We were greeted with a very long queue for the monorail, which didn't really make sense as the car park seemed a bit quiet. It turned out the Monorail had broken down. After a 10-15 minute walk, we arrived at the fantastic entrance.Once inside, Ben started planning I love this tree. The Towers. A magnificent building. Our party split up to ride different things. As I was on my own at this point, I managed two goes in a row on Thirteen via the single rider queue. I was on within 5 minutes This was my first encounter on Thirteen and I loved it. The theming of the station and trains is excellent and the ride itself is really fun. The surprise at the end was brilliant After my Thirteen experience I had a go on Hex. I hate waiting through the pre ride film but I just love the ride itself. 'Stunning' doesn't do it justice.I didn't ride R.I.T.A. as I find it quite overated but I practiced my ride photography on it, instead.Flying Toadstools.I joined up with Debbie, Lydia and Ben at the Go Go Go Show, which was truly awful. Still, Ben liked it and got some autogrpahs afterwards.A BMX event was going on.We all regrouped and had a proper cooked dinner at Woodcutters restaurant. I had a cheeky Peroni with mine and the food was delicious. However, I was a few seconds late asking for my Pass Holder discount and was refused it :cursing: Fortunately, cutomer services sorted it out at the end of the day :thumbup1: After lunch, I took Ben on the Runaway Mine Train. It was faster than I remembered it and we really enjoyed it.We rode Duel and I got the highest score!I like this section of Towers.Battle Galleons.Ben hitches a lift The gardens are magnificent.Cable Cars in the distance.Near Kantanga Canyon, I spotted this pretty water fall.We all rode Log Flume and Kantanga Canyon. We had such a blast on these two rides We split up again for the final part of the day and I rode Oblivion and Nemesis with Kane, Lydia and Georgia. Both were pretty much walk on and it was just bliss, riding Nemesis again. It's one of my favourite coasters in the world.Monorail back to the car.Well, we had a cracking day at Alton Towers. It was our first visit in a few years and it was great to see the changes made since our last visit. We felt really lucky with the short queues. Oblivion was walk on all day and almost all the major rides were 15-20 minute waits. The staff were helpful and friendly and customer services did a great job on refunding our owed savings on our lovely dinner. Towers surpassed themselves on our visit and I'd love to return soon.Hope you enjoy the report. Next part is from Wicksteed Park in Kettering....Chris.

Afternoon everyone!I got back from Florida last week, after literally the holiday of a lifetime. I'm feeling it now- I came crashing back down to reality so hard due to various reasons and circumstances at home and I'm finding it really hard. It'll be a little while before I'm back on the forums properly so please be patient with me whilst I work through things. With that said, I'd like to introduce you to my trip reports! I'm going to try and do things a little differently; I'm going to post summaries on here, so for people who want to just have a brief outline, they can read on here. For those that want to know every single detail about the trip, they can click on a link to my blog and can read it in full there. This is to prevent this topic from becoming a chore for me to write in and keep it interesting to read and write. I realise not everyone enjoys reading all the gory details. Here is a bit of background info, before I go into day-by-day reports. This is my auntie and uncle who I love very much. My auntie especially, is basically an extension of me and my character. I really do love her to bits. My uncle is brilliant. They both paid for the entire holiday, which was a joint Christmas and Birthday present for my 21st... (and 22nd, 23rd, 24th... you get the picture). I have a lot to be grateful for.For those that don't know. This is me. I'm just a few sandwiches short of a picnic. This trip has really made me realise even more what audiences want from an attraction/ show and demonstrated even further that this differs from each culture. It has also made me appreciate our UK and European theme parks with a level of respect and admiration.... I'll get to that at some point, it's just trying to find the right time.I'm already thinking about the next time I go, what I'd do differently and what I'd keep the same. I came to this conclusion- it depends on who you go with. It is only really theme park nuts like us on here who would be up for doing theme parks, day in, day out for a couple of weeks. We ended up doing that this time and by the end of it, I was finding it all very monotonous and I wanted to hit people over the head with a very large, blunt instrument. If I went again, I'd spread the theme park days out a little, that way, I can appreciate each park even more, without finding the whole thing contrived and to the point where all of the parks merge into one. This is not to say I felt like this all of the time. I really do love their theme parks over there and are some of the best in the World. However, they are not perfect, just like every other theme park in the world and have areas of improvement. I'll cover that in each individual trip report.I flooded the wet room. There was no drainage.... work that one out. This was in the hotel at Gatwick airport; I love how they gave me a disabled room. They clearly knew I was coming. ;)We stayed in a very cheap and cheerful suite in Orlando. Celebration Suites, Kissimmee. This was the main reception. Around this are various "blocks" of suites. I'll be honest, they are the equivalent of a council estate flat you'd find in London. Nothing wrong with that of course, but perhaps not if you're on holiday and wanting to spend a bit of relaxation time in your apartment. However, we knew we'd only be literally sleeping there and out and about the rest of the time. To put it in perspective, we'd be having breakfast by 8:30 most days. we'd get back after an evening, have a couple of drinks and then crash out. A crash pad is all we needed. It was also cheap, I believe it was £600 for three of us for 14 nights. You get what you pay for.Denny's- where we ate breakfast. My uncle loves it there. I would have settled for some cereal at the apartment some days and I'll admit it got a bit much towards the end, however we didn't have to have loads every morning, I spose! Beyond the Denny's sign is the "Fun Spot" in Old Town, Kissimmee. They boast the World's largest "Sky Coaster" and also a collection of other Fairground type attractions.Next time, I will do only one group of theme parks, either Universal or Disney and make an excursion to Busch or Sea World. I will without doubt, do Discovery Cove again though, which was arguably one of the most special things I have ever done. I'd stay in a Villa and in between theme park days, I'd lounge about in the villa for some relaxation time, which you desperately need.I feel like I'm doing this holiday a disservice. I had such a blast on holiday and I feel like I've got to know my auntie and uncle even more. That was one of the best perks about the holiday- spending lots of time with them. I miss them.I seem to have gotten ahead of myself though, back to England....MATE: I am ready! :PSo we arrive at the Hotel in Gatwick Airport (which was very nice and included a meal within the price). We're very excited and also relieved after a stressful couple of days doing the usual routine thing you do before going on holiday. At the dinner table, it was time for our first group picture of the holiday! Funny moment- I'm watching Come Dine with me in the room and my auntie asks.... "OHHHH, is this the menu for downstairs?" I let her watch it for a few seconds and then look over to her, she's looking at me as though to tell her what's on the menu. "Ohh, is that chicken?!" Haha, bless her.Fast- forward!Breakfast at the Airport and we have an awesome view of the planes.YEAH! BA! :DI'd fly with BA again. They were a lot cheaper than Virgin and we also received better service than I did with Virgin last time. You're able to book your seats 24 hours in advance without any extra charge, so this is what we did. We managed to get exit seats, so yay for unlimited leg-room!Very tired and nervous auntie. It feels as though we blinked and we were in Orlando, drinking in a bar in Old Town. We are exhausted but also excited for what's to come... one of my favourite parks... Magic Kingdom.Magic Kingdom tomorrow.

pluk reacted to britcitchris in The Britcitchris Family Theme Park Holiday 2011 - Park 1: Warwick Castle
After saving up our Tesco Clubcard Vouchers for a long time, we used them up on some Merlin passes. The plan was was 3 fold. 1: Over the period of a week, during the summer holidays; Journey up to Warwick to visit Warwick Castle and then Alton Towers, the next day. (Hotel in Solihull as base.) Part 2 was to journey south to Kettering and meet my folks at Wicksteed Park, a park I used to frequent as a kid and one that I have lots of memories of. Part 3 was to carry on south to the inlaws in Essex and use that as a base for Thorpe Park and Chessington. A busy week but one that I was hugely looking forward to.....So, on to our first park/attraction then - Warwick Castle. After parking in the very unusual car park (no defined spaces, just woodland,) we trekked to the entrance. Some of the walk is quite pretty though This Archer outside the entrance was doing a brilliant job of entertaining the arrivals.Quite a character. Now I have to say that I was quite taken aback by the pricing and money grabbing tactics at Warwick Castle. This was our first visit and I was hoping for something cultured. Those that have been will know I was in for a surprise then..... Non pass holders had to pay a whopping £24 to get in and then cough up a further £7.80 for the Dungeons and another £4 for the new Merlin: The Tower Even Standard Annual Pass Holders had to cough up for these attractions. Shocking..... Once inside, there are countless stalls/attractions that charge you for something. I quickly realised that this was not much more than a glorified theme park, minus the rides..... Once I had gotten over this realisation, I relaxed into the day and the family all enjoyed themselves. The sun was out and there were lots of people enjoying themselves. Some more pictures. The following shots are from inside the main hall and is really great to look around.Family shot. The Birds of Prey display was excellent. The Battle re-enactment was great but you had to sit a mile away from it.The walk around the towers is brilliant but tiring.Stunning views. The Towers walk ends with an underground section where you get to try on different helmets and see various weapons. This by far, was my favourite bit.My son, Ben really liked this bit, too The teens try some head gear on.As do I.Love the hat, Kane These chaps were brilliant. They did a show which exposes all the cobblers in Hollywood stage fighting. Comical and informative. We bought Ben a small wooden sword Warwick Castle's trebuchet is a marvel and it's a must, to see it launch a fireball. Sadly I fluffed my photo of the launch, so here is a photo before the actual launch itself. So, a great day out but I must say that the pricing and money grabbing took some getting used to. £6 car park fee, too!! We did treat the teens to the Dungeons and they enjoyed it but said the London ones were better. I can't say that we'll be hurrying back to Warwick Castle but we did enjoy it. The actors are top notch and there is plenty to see and do. Just take plenty of moola in your wallet.Chris.

pluk got a reaction from Mark9 in The 5th Dimension
A bit of info on the reasons behind the sad demise:Dan Longley was a Tussauds Studios AV technician when The 5th Dimension was built, and played a major role in the 1988 revamp. Here, he tells us about the ride:I worked on the original Tussauds in-house team that designed and built the 5th Dimension. As an AV technician, I was responsible for many of the special effects on the ride. The ride had great aspirations and design ideas but the storyline was a bit too wordy and the sets were not convincing - you didn't feel as if you were going into another world, it just felt like a load of sets in a metal shed built by humans! Some of the effects were good, though I say it myself! I designed a laser/strobe tunnel (travel through galaxies) which you ascended up through after entering through the computer screen. Steve from the Planetarium designed and built the laser unit which consisted of 20 x 100mW lasers (if my memory serves right) and a massive array of mirrors and servos. These lasers were chosen because they were the only low-powered lasers that you could legally and safely point directly at the public at the time. They also didn't require a massive cooling system which I seem to remember lasers used in those days!Unfortunately, we were installing everything into a cold, dirty industrial environment - not suitable for such delicate equipment! These were pioneering days for us! Needless to say, the laser unit needed nursing and it wasn't clear (certainly to me) how or who had the expertise to undertake the maintenance. This was the same for all the animations, light focussing, etc.A month or so later, a memo went around the studio heads mentioning me in all but name for the ride's failure to meet expectations. It was true that many of the effects needed maintenance (which wasn't happening) but it showed how essential the effects had been. So, I trotted off to see Ray Barrett, who was director responsible for new projects at the time, and said that I would like to go down and sort things out. John Wardley agreed to supervise me, Tussauds put in a further sum of money, and I was very much left to my own devices!I worked very closely with Chessington's resident scenic theming team (who hadn't been involved in the original work). They 'filled' up the scenes to make the sets more encompassing and atmospheric, which I think was successful. We also re-thought through the whole ride, including the script.I cannot stress to you how appalling conditions were working in the cold winter months in a blacked-out unheated barn. It doesn't matter how many floodlights you use in a black box - it's still dark and dangerous! The refurbishments had to be ready for the new season (88?) and we just about completed on time. I kept a small team on to fine-tune the show with the public on the ride, checking timings of all the trains, etc.So. after all the work, was it worth it? The answer, I'm afraid, is probably not really. It was a good ride but in the wrong place at the wrong time and operated by the wrong team! I'll explain:I think we as the designers took short-cuts in creating solutions; unfortunately, we didn't have the resources that Disney would have available for such a dark ride. When you design something new it is always a prototype; ideally the prototype is tested and then re-designed and re-engineered into a final product solution. Unfortunately, we never have that luxury! The problem with the operation of the Fifth Dimension was to do with the fact that it was not really a 'suitable' theme park ride. It was a 'show' and should have been presented as such. As a 'performance artist' I understood this. When I supervised the operation of the re-vamped ride, I would ensure that all visitors were held back and I made sure they listened to the video introduction in the queue area.To assist the operator, the loading bay entrance door, video sequence, trains, special effects were all synchronised to ensure that the visitor's 'experience' was maximised, and a similar experience for each visitor. Under my control, I would insist that every train went into the ride full (try performing to an empty auditorium - it's not fun!). When the trains came out of the ride the visitors would often burst into spontaneous applause!I would train up the operators and explain to them that they were managing a show, a performance, and how important timing and hype was to the 'adventure'. I'd leave them to it and all running to perfection! The next day I would come in and the staff would have changed! Chessington employs 10s of low-paid casual (student) labour over the season, so I realised I had no hope of training them all. Anyway, they didn't work for me and they had other priorities! So, I would come in the next morning and take a test ride. My first observation was that only a few people would be put on the train. The passengers hadn't seen the introduction properly so they had no idea what the ride was about - many thought they were going on a roller coaster (and you couldn't convince them otherwise!). Worse still, the park's ride engineers had been in that morning to inspect the trains, etc, and they would leave a door open somewhere, which would flood a scene with daylight and completely ruin the dramatic effect. [Actually, as a point of interest, it only takes a single LED to ruin the effect of a black-out. Try standing in darkness in a room that has an infrared sensor for the home burglar alarm].And that basically was the problem. It was a theatrical show and should have been conceived and operated as such. And like all shows the balance between brilliance and appallingness is a fine line. The ride part is an irrelevance - it perhaps would have helped to have advertised the 'ride' along the lines of the 'travelling laser theatre show'! Well, the psychology is the hardest part to get right, or perhaps I should say 'communication' is...Dan Longley MBA BA (Hons) MAPMVisiting lecturer in Tourism StudiesBirmingham, UKFrom the depths of archived reride.net. - bring back reride.net !!

(Split into 2 posts due to number of images per post restrictions)With Rita out of the way and a quick toilet break achieved, we noticed Th13teen trains carrying passengers.. Th13teen had reopened! As this must have been fairly recent, we decided to venture to the woods for a second time. Though it did end up being a longer queue than we expected (probably the longest queue of the day at just under 40 minutes), we didn't really care - we all enjoyed the ride. I don't think I really need to go into much detail about it again, but even after knowing what experience awaited me, I still found it enjoyable and a great ride - to me, it is far from a little kiddie ride with a one trick pony ending. It gels together well, but suffers from trims and terrible marketing. In some ways, I think it would have been better to go for a more upbeat theme for it to have been more of a success. Anyways, enough rambling on about Th13teen, here's a few more pictures from the queue line:The hooded figure. The half-swallowed up van.The second Th13teen ORP. I seem happy... :DSo, with Th13teen out of the way for a second time, it was time to bid farewell from the Dark Forest for good this time, and time to go back to secrecy with the X Sector and finally ride Submission. Windows on the way there.Nice weather complimenting a nice scenery. It was raining earlier? So, we finally reached Submission. Unlike last time, when there was a full queue, we were greeted by a near-on empty queue - it pleased me muchly. It was quite amusing watching the cycle prior to ours - when the ride was hung upside, a 5p just dropped to the ground; certainly made everyone around chuckle. Now, I've read a few reviews of people saying that the restraints were more than a little bit uncomfortable, so I was slightly worried, especially as they reminded me very much of a Top Spin's restraints. However, ever being squished in at the edge of the row against the side barrier, I found them quite comfy. Granted, they weren't like air's, nor were they they most comfy thing around, but I couldn't see a reason for complaint. Anyway, as for the actual ride itself, I found it very much like a Swinging Ship, Magic Carpet and Sky Swat all thrown into one. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I dunno, it was just great fun. It gets the best bits of them and turns it into something that works really well - it's just a good ride. However, what spoils it is the theme and the theming, or the lack of it. I didn't hear any audio for it, couldn't see any sort of theming and it just felt like and 'here's a ride plonked here, you queue for it, you ride it and you leave it' job, which is not what AT rides are like. Despite the great ride experience, I felt short changed by the lack of everything else, which is not great really..Now, in a sensible move, we wandered over to Sonic Spinball for a spin. Now, after my go on it last time, I rated the ride higher than Dragon's Fury at Chessie, which seems to be against the general opinion. I more put it down to riding Fury more often more recently, but a second go sounded good to see if that was the case.Nice shot of the Towers.Spinning around.Random photo.Just in case I forgot what ride I was queueing up for...You can guess where I was trying to get the car really..And I failed.Last one.I one thing I like about this more than Fury is the queue line. The little games make the queue seem that little bit quicker, and the actual queue layout is not as painful as the cattlepen of Fury. That, and interaction (sorta) with the ride itself. The half-full queue did move quickly really. As for the actual ride, we got a great spin, better than last time, on it due to get the weighting right. However, there's just something about it that didn't really give me the same feeling as last time. I don't know what it is, but I just don't rate it as highly any more. After all is said and done, I think the ride experience is as good as Fury, but I think Spinball's queue line clinches it for me; it still has that slight edge over Fury. Spinball ORP.The SBNO Beastie lies behind the fence of dullness. After some more treking, it was last ride of the day - Runaway Mine Train. After missing out on it last time due to it being closed because of the valleying incident, it was nice to be able to do a complete run-around of all 7 coasters. As I said, I like mine trains and this one did not disappoint! I enjoyed the theme, the theming, the interaction with CRR, the layout - it was just an enjoyable ride. One niggle was the operator, who seemed very half-hearted when giving announcements, even the 'Choo Choo' she gave sounded a bit 'Why am I here?' (I don't think it was 'Choo Choo Lady' though, it's worth saying). Apart from that, a great little mine train.Nice bits of theming work well for me.Speeding past.Despite the lack of enthusiasm on my face, I am enjoying the ride!Couple more photos before I round off:Congo River Rapids. Was disappointed not to get on any water rides during the trip, but the bigger rides took priority. Could have fitted this in at the end, but didn't fancy a 3 and a half hour odd car journey home wet..Another view of the Towers.Nemesis wins it for me!That's my trip really. As you can tell, I thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was certainly worth the wait. The weather was just what we wanted, the staff were more or less all brilliant: chatty, friendly, helpful and added to the day. The rides were brilliant as well - it was just an amazing day. Popped into the shop in Towers Street to pick up the ORPs from the day and did a fair bit of shopping; bought: the Monorail Mug Pack, Nemesis and Th13teen mugs (I'm a mug for Mugs, okay? ), Th13teen hoodie, Th13teen bear, replica Th13teen necklace from the advert, Th13teen paperweight and Alton Towers Monopoly. Okay, I splashed out more than a little bit, but this was basically my holiday for the year. The only real problem I have with AT was the wasps - there were tonnes of the blooming things around, and it did make getting drinks a bit of a nuisance. Apart from that, the place is absolutely perfect. I can't wait for my next visit - whenever that may be!

We hope that this non-profit site can be used alongside such great sites like Thorpeparkmania.co.uk as a reference guide to the history of the park. We are planning to focus mainly on the years when Thorpe Park was a family orientated water park and the Thorpe Park Ranger days. Please check out this site (which has been over a year in the making) and let me know what you think. Many ThanksPhill

Must agree I think it is well beyond a retheme being worthwhile, it really is a knackered old thing. I just think a logflume is too much of a themepark staple to not be replaced with another one of some sort, hopefully in a way that interacts with whatever SW7 brings, if indeed it is going in that area.
