Posted December 21, 201113 yr comment_128980 After Runnymede's recent site rebuild its now easier to find past planning applications, some of which are quite interesting including plans from when RMC planned Tidal Wave, before Tussauds took over and gave us what we have today.Just head to http://planning.runnymede.gov.uk/Northgate/PlanningExplorer/GeneralSearch.aspx and enter "Thorpe Park" under address. Enjoy
December 21, 201113 yr comment_128981 That's quite cool, like looking at old plans and seeing what did and didn't make it... Looking at Inferno's original bland old station compared to now for example, Colossus' original entrance was between the Cobra Roll...*Prays for Staffordshire to do the same*
December 21, 201113 yr comment_129009 Oooh, I like it. Hours of fun. 17/01/2002 - 5 year extension to detonator. 2007 - No further extension applied for? Odd. 06-06-2005 - Want to built a massive coaster? On the greenbelt? Yeah, no problems! 26-07-2005 - An illumanated bus stop advert? On the greenbelt? No way!
December 21, 201113 yr Author comment_129010 I think Detonator's planning permission was changed to permanently not so long ago
December 21, 201113 yr comment_129011 Some GREAT bits there.. TIDAL WAVE? Hello!! Suddenly, the odd Detonator pirate theme becomes clear!Sadly, can't seem to view the older applications as X or even Loggers Leap
December 21, 201113 yr comment_129018 Few things I find interesting, the original plans for Colossus... you can see the outline but not a lot else, seems completely different! And also, what is the family coaster referred to in the Detonator application? Where sound levels were tested on Traumatizer at Southport.Cheers for pointing this out!
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129031 What I found interesting is that Colossus was originally planned to be a LIM launched coaster! Didn't see that coming.
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129045 Anyone see this one?http://planning.runn...ef=RU.02%2f0852 (DCONEPLAN)one of these Proposed to be in the location quantum is now in.. Must have been rejected?
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129046 I found some old plans a few weeks ago about the "2002 Coaster as Approved". There's an image/plan somewhere but they're very unclear about how what Colossus would have been would've worked layout wise. It's clearly a LIM coaster, but Tussauds went with an Intamin multi-looper because gravity was more trusted, apparently...EDIT: Found the plan, but it's been removed from Photobucket. It's on this page though (second image down): http://merlinmania.c...er-Pre-ColossusWith thanks to Merlin Mania.
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129047 ^ Which manufacturer would that have been then? Premier I'm guessing?
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129048 Premier was my first guess; I doubt it was Intamin as back then they went for far more conventional shapes to their elements whereas you can see from the plans it looks like a very strangely designed ride. I can't seem to work out that Cobra roll or the squiggly elements after it?
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129049 It's quite interesting seeing the changes in plans to be honest, Tidal Wave's originally proposed station looked like it could have been pretty awesome! It also makes me think that if Thorpe were to have installed that LIM coaster, would we have Stealth today, due to them already having had a launch coaster? And maybe Intamin could have done the LIM coaster too? I'm thinking along the lines of them doing California Screamin'
December 22, 201113 yr comment_129050 Certainlly Tidal Wave and Pirates 4D/Detonator area would have been great! Also, launch tunnel for Colossus V0.1 anyone?Really good to go back through all these, a shame they don't seem to have the drawings for the older stuff.
