  1. I don't see how it's messy and gross at all to be honest.  The park has been cleaned up a lot in the past few years, and the interaction between coasters is part of why I like the park so much.

As for Valhalla, you can't judge a ride if you haven't been on it.

I can judge the theming, actually. The tunnels look awful in my opinion. I said Pleasure Beach is messy because all the rides are crammed on top of one another and there's a lot of wood/metal and not a lot of greenery compared to other parks I've visited.

  2. I know PBB are doing some things to clean the place up, but to me the whole park is just messy and gross. Plus no rides really stand out for me, although I've never ridden Valhalla. Saying that, Valhalla doesn't look as good as Chiapas was in my opinion! Valhalla's rock tunnels with four straight walls and right angles aren't very convincing.

  3. I just thought, these people are jumping over a fence to get such a little, inexpensive item of clothing. I wouldn't wear a hat on most coasters anyway, but if mine did fly off into a restricted area, I'd probably just let it go if the staff couldn't get it until after I leave the park. A few quid wasted but I'm safe!

I can see why people take the risk but it's very silly :L

  4. Keep the rides and rename your park 'Chessington'. Invest in new hotels / resort things and retheme rides constantly.

For the truly authentic feel, make sure you have rides closed for months at a time.

And don't forget a Facebook page for angry mothers to slate your park over any minor issue.

  5. When I've been there, if you do ever go near a group of roaming actors, they might do that. I've seen it done to other people, but they only stick props in my face for a few seconds or make weird facial expressions to me!

  6. Interesting, I'd say it's the weakest one so far (in my opinion of course). Bit generic, the previous videos were decent I guess! I am looking forward to doing this attraction (if I go again this year) however after the last three years of lame Fright Nights, I have low expectations!

    2010/11 Fright Nights were great!

  7. Closest mazes I have done to this is Experiment 10 (not really) and Thirteen Seance. The first few minutes was just walking down a pitch black corridor towards a door. It was scarier than it sounds.

No that's the sort of thing I like! I find that so much scarier than a bloke in a mask jumping out at me.

Isn't Blair Witch basically an attraction all about tension?  The finale is still a bit lacklustre, but the whole of the route before then is all about building the tension, making you wonder what's ahead, etc.  I guess the fact that it only has a 2/5 star rating speaks volumes about what Thorpe / Thorpe's target market think about tension-building attractions though?

In a way I suppose you're right, but BWP (for me) was a bit of a fail. I could see a metal fence on my left the entire time and wooden walls on the right. I never felt like I was in a mysterious forest or anything! And as you mentioned, the finale was a shed. Literally just a shed.

  8. Part of me wishes they'd stay away from cheesy stuff though. To me, a teaser trailer with tension/suspense is scarier than one with a clown eating green things or blood etc.

When I go to inside an attraction at Fright Nights, I know that I'm not going to be eaten, tortured or murdered. I know cliché horror advertising works for Thorpe Parks demographic, but I'd love to see an attraction all about tension.

For example, a maze advertised in a way that builds up to something physical (like a room at the end, an object) would be terrifying. Take Oblivion for example. On my first time, the whole experience was frightening because you get a message drilled into your head before riding, however you're never told what is inside the hole, or how deep it really is. The hole in the ground isn't something hard to understand like a computer system or aliens, it's something so simple yet dramatic at the same time!

I'm probably making no sense at all...

  9. I still don't understand fully why Shrek was chosen as the IP.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first two films (the rest I won't mention) very much, however it just feels slightly dead? Despicable Me or something similar I could see going down slightly better however even then, I don't see that being too popular either. Shrek just doesn't feel particularly loved by the British compared to something like Wallace and Gromit or Doctor Who, at least that's the way I see it anyway! I don't like Doctor Who anymore however I could see a similar attraction with that IP being an instant success and would probably attract tourists from the US.

I'm sure there are many reasons why it was chosen, but right now I just don't get it.

  10. I'd also like to know actually. I assume it feels like Inferno's tunnel section but faster and snappier?

Anyway, theming work continues on Taron and Klugheim! No more track work yet which is odd as I would have thought track would be finished first? I don't know a thing about construction so I wouldn't know :P

Some more footers about to be themed with rocks topped with wooden beams...

A new theming structure is rising in the middle! I noticed it when I visited but I have no clue what it is!

And to finish, the front facade of the station building!

  11. On their (old) website you could book your hotel and park tickets together, not sure about their new website!

As for the hotels, I agree with Benin. I didn't stay on site this time (I stayed a 5 minute drive away) however we went for meals/cocktails at both Matamba and Ling Bao and they are both STUNNING. Ling Bao is quite expensive so I'd recommend staying at Matamba and just exploring the other hotel in the evening!

Have fun, Phantasialand is a wonderful place!

  12. How could it be if there's an unload and offload section? And the ride loads on the first floor but then seemingly lowers to the ground floor at some point. And the building is massive.

Ugh I'm stumped. I really doubt it's a simulator though, at least not the type we have seen before.

  13. Visited the park on Wednesday and Thursday this week, had a fab time as usual. Reliability was great, all staff (except one) were friendly and extremely welcoming, and the hotels are amazing!

One thing about Mystery Castle that's worth noting if you go...

I was talking after hours to a British member of staff who works on Mystery Castle, and when I asked him about the crap setting sometimes used, he says they've changed it so the good setting is used every afternoon, just not in the morning. I asked why and he said people will leave with a bad impression otherwise, but to me, a short cycle would be a bad start to a day too.

Taron looks incredible in person, even more so than in July when I visited. The layout is a lovely mess and the station building is already huge! The rock work also looks ten times better in person than in photos. Actually, the rocks look completely different off camera.

Oh, and I also bothered to wait for front row on Black Mamba this time, and it was actually fantastic. No rattle or shakiness, it was amazing! I'd say it's one of my favourites now, although people are right in saying it does too much too soon.

Some photos I quickly took of Taron...

The rocks look a lot more colourful in these than in others I've seen on the internet which is why I posted them :)
