Nath Posted January 17, 2008 Report Share Posted January 17, 2008 Right, I will give you my lowdown about my experience with Apple and Mac as a whole.Ok, so about a month ago I bought a new 24inch Imac, this is my first mac and I have to admit it did take a little time to get used to things.I think the feud between the mac and pc is ridiculous, they are two very different things, designed for different target markets too, so when there's this big ass arguments going on everywhere about people going 'OMGZ MAC SUCKS, LINUX/WINDOZ FOR DA WIN' it makes me want to punch people, and I’m not saying all windows users are like that, and I’m not saying that mac users don't dish the s**t out as well, they are both to blame for it.But what I’ve found out is, there are both pros and cons with both of the OS' and the companies.In my experience, I was a PC user for all of my life, well...since the good ol age of 8 and starting off with windows 1.3 or whatever it was. But due to my lifestyle and work (I'm a photographer) I decided to buy my first mac this year to aid me in my job. Now I'm not saying that macs are only arty farty computers, but they certainly have the best range of editing programs compared to it's former rival. My mac is great, I wouldn't so much say (in true macboy fashion) 'it's changed my life!11!!1!' but it's a pretty kick ass computer. With very simular specs compared to my pc, my mac boots up in under 30 seconds, and that's including the fact you can actually use it after that 30 seconds. Rather than compared to the pc, where it boots through bios screens, welcome screens, OS' loading screens, etc etc, to when you finally get you start bar up and your desktop loaded...but wait....I CAN'T DO A BLOODY THING! oh that's it, I'm waiting for all the s**t booting up in the background (and before any of you go, 'well sort out your start up programs, I have only the necessary progs that are required to start up the bloomin' machine!)While they both come with their pro’s and cons, I believe mac offer the best compatibility, without having to download and install drivers for simple plug and play accessories, such as a camera, or a printer, with mac, they just work. Also small things make my life easier, such as if I read a piece of text or see a picture on the internet, instead of right clicking, saving as, then finding a location, I can simply just click on anything on the web and drag and drop it to my desktop, along with other things like that mac is top trump in my eyes. There are downfalls however, such as not being able to rename a selection of items without using another program called automator, and also the obvious factor of game compatibility. Although saying that EA are now releasing every one of their games with the option of the windows and mac platforms. Saying that however, mac is the only computer that lets you install numerous OS’ without all the s**t, such as, I have windows on my mac, ONLY for games though as I refuse to now use the annoying OS.I’ve read plenty of bad things about mac, and I won’t lie, some of them are true. Sometimes mac are cheaply put together, the price tag on some of their computers is stupidly high, but it’s because of the aesthetics, and to be honest with you, would you like to sit at home or wherever using a fugly computer? I sure wouldn’t. When it comes down to it, it’s all about the user and what they prefer, instead of all of this mac/pc kicks pc/mac’s ass, because it’s all a load of crap. Marc Posted January 19, 2008 Report Share Posted January 19, 2008 Ah but thats apples own doing by brining out stupid adverts which totally give out the wrong idea, the whole I'm a mac, I'm a pc has to be one of the most stupid things ive seen.Firstly why does the pc look big old and ugly, do the brainbox's at apple forget that PC's unlike the mighty macs are customizable? They can be as big or as small as you wish with different form factors etc available, sure you cant get it all built into a screen.. but I cant see my lovely nvidia 8800gt fitting anywhere in that white box.Another classic one is the webcam one.. wow this "cool guy" has all this amazing **** built in and he dont have to add anything extra, agian the marketing people at apple seem to forget that technology does actually evolve, weather you have a mac or not, some of there main features seem to be there shortcomings, who wants to spend £1000 on a pc sorry I mean MAC and in a years time be faced with sticking with old technology or forking out yet more of your money? A fair few mac owners like to argue the point that there mac does everything they need... for now.. so what happens in a years time this kick ass game comes out.. because technology has evolved it requires this and that... the pc owner can buy a lovely new shiney graphics card, what can the mac owner do, prove me wrong but I'm fairly sure you cant stick a new graphics card in a mac. As a whole I guess my problem isnt with the computer its self, its the way its sold by apple and the ultimate fanboyism which follows. In design, well its arguable each way but id rather have a sleek, glossy mac, simple with barely any wires than a fugly thing my parents have got with about a million ports we dont used and more wired than is necessary. Plus now don't have to fork out of a chunky webcam and microphone, bluetooth dongle and in some cases a wireless card. Also little features such as the magnetic power cord is such a god send. As for old technology, my friend still uses her ibook and doesnt feel she needs to upgrade - and as far as I'm aware she can still buy software for it. But what really makes me love apple is that windows relys on everything else to run. for a start you need to buy a PC - Dell/PB/HP/Compaq etc. not a make called microsoft. Then you need to buy antivirus - Norton/McAfee. Then you need to get a cam - Logic, etc. It goes on. With mac you buy a mac and each essential you may need seems to be covered by apple - thus you know it will work. And it does.but yeh, whatever float your boat. I can get anything a pc can just, in a mac format. that quite frankly, would probably work better.& as for the out of the box start, with a dell you'd have to pug in all the speakers, webcam, tower to monitor etc. with a mac, stick it in the plug & within under 20secs your ready to use. I hardly find that a hardship. And with PC's you have way more options.. I have a 5.1 speaker set, plugs straght into the back of my motherboard.. unless things have changed if I wanted to do that on a mac I would have to go out and buy a USB soundcard which is actaully compatable with a mac to get anywhere.. And I bet they're as good a quality as the ipod earphones! (being the worst quality earphones I have ever used - I dont buy apple products, apart from 97p ones which I wanted to use for a day ) with a mac, speakers are just 'plug in and play' via usb ports. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> All speakers are plug and play, unless you want to install hardware for them which is optional. I was speaking to my friend who got a job at PC World recently, and I asked why they always had 3rd party speakers connected. My friend said they don't tell you they have them built in, so people think they have to buy the extra speakers, when in reality they don't. Mac built in speakers are good, clear and crisp and dont distort when going loud, but it lacks a bit of bass. As for the Mac ads being stupid, they may annoy you, but their effective. Ask anyone, and they'll proberly know about the "I'm a Mac thing". Last year they established the characters, and what was bad with the PC. This year now thats all established, they are pointing out the benefits of the Mac, such as Time Machine. It's a good advert campaign. Apple have always had marketing licked. My 15 year old son left in the middle because he had to throw up. I loved it! (The movie, not the barf.) few people throw up... and a few people run out of the theater A friend of mine said several people threw up in the theater she saw it at and she started to feel sick and ended up leaving.
