  1. Just to put out - I absolutely adore the ride's theme and name and backstory, and here's why. This year in March was the first time I had ever been to a park that wasn't Thorpe or Chessington (well, in my decent memory) and it was Alton Towers. Yes I know a lot of you will go "yeah but it's just another Merlin Park" but I disagree, it is in several ways a great deal different to the others. I love the themed areas and all of that which is not used to effect in the other parks, and so because I was starting to become a geek at the time I did some research into the rides and things, and (from my preferences at Thorpe and Chessie) was told that the Smiler would probably be my favourite ride. It didn't disappoint. But before I went I researched the ride, theme, the whole backstory, I read every take on it and saw every video on the website. I completely and utterly fell in love with the theme, the Ministry of Joy, the whole idea of people these days being miserable and a cult being created to force everyone into being happy (I know that's not the exact story but it is in essence and I'm paraphrasing for the purpose of this rant/speech). I think it's brilliant.

ANYWAY. The purpose of this. Yes, to people who have been enthusiasts for years and have more experience than I, the name may be bad/lacking/could be better, and I will agree that the backstory could be explained better or more in depth. But I don't think it should be. It would be impractical in the space that they have, and wouldn't for in with the other ride types around the park, and it's unnecessary. Enough is put across, and more can be found out if a person (like I was) is inspired by it and wants to know. Plus a majority of the GP will just go for the rides, not the story and experience, because it isn't what they expect or are looking for because they don't know what can be done. Maybe that will change this year with WC16 exposing them to a different type of ride which doesn't just do what you can see it doing from miles away. But maybe it won't. In which case themes expressed like this can still grab people, like the Smiler's did me :)

To avoid double posting I'm gonna post my theory here. A lot of the clues and videos are pointing towards clues and fears that many people experience.

Clue 4 had the word "bellow". Bellow as in underground? Trains?

If it meant 'below' as in 'below the ground' it would have had one L. To 'bellow' is to yell at someone really loudly.

Not meaning to discredit your theory, I actually find it quite interesting :D

  5. My favourite thing in this story was the response from some British Muslim bystanders as the police had the attacker pinned down... "You ain't no Muslim bruv!" Which is now trending as a hashtag. If only all Muslims had this response, we would all be sorted.

  7. So last night at my air cadets squadron we had our annual awards evening and I got awarded not only a freakin' sword for my achievements over the year but I got promoted to the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer, which is the highest rank a cadet can hold... I'm still so happy I can't get this grin off my face :D It means so much and I will admit when I sat down after collecting it I got all emotional and had myself a few tears! So happy the staff at my squadron have this much faith in me and I hope I can show them that I deserve it :)

  8. Still, at least it means that Loggers will (hopefully) be the only permanent closure in 2016, which isn't as bad as I was expecting based on Alton.

Maybe (as everyone seemed so sure on the closures of Slammer and X at Thorpe) they had originally planned more closures at Thorpe but then decided to close more at Alton instead thinking the park had already had such damage done to it this year it could be used to save money next year before trying to save it the year after?

  9. Had quite a successful first year as a geek...

    Thorpe Park: 20-something

    Alton Towers: 5

    Chessington: 4

    Adventure Island: 1

    Drayton Manor: 1

    Legoland Windsor: 1

    Oakwood: 1

    Funland Hayling Island: 1

Plus once in the London Dungeons, Shrek's Adventure and Sealife, and a couple of times on the Eye :)
