  1. It's a bit poor to only have one train on when there's a half an hour queue, and only two main rides open.

Like how Pepsi Max was on one train today? Swarm and Stealth have had next-to-no queues for 90% of the week. There haven't been any complains regarding people not being able to do as much as they wanted because of queues.

^you went on a bad day. I went yesterday and the park was dead. Storm Surge's trough was getting filled up with water yesterday so it was signed off yesterday. Inferno could of still opened I got told its checks were done in December along with X and they were signed off. As well The Swarm broke down for 5 minutes yesterday whilst we were in the queue

Storm Surge has not been signed off. Inferno has not been signed off. X has not been signed off.
  2. What will the park do if the swarm and stealth suffer fairly major breakdowns simultaneously?

If swarm and stealth' winter maintenance hasn't been carried out to the full, and rides both suffer technical difficulties; whether it's for 1,2 or 3 days. What will the park do then? With no back ups it appears they only have the option to answer: "Rides and attractions are subject to avaliblity". However, I can imagine the few hundred people on park will be extremely angry paying a fee to get in and finding the top 2 rides closed, and only 4 kiddy rides to do.

Rides are subject to avalibility may be an excuse when the full park is open, however in this case if they use that excuse they will be receiving a battering from park guests who have exclusively paid to ride the swarm and stealth and finding they are broken with no substitutions open. I imagine thorpe are going through this week praying nothing breaks down, as they will not have any solutions to the problems if the major rides are broken for a few days.

What basis do you have to suggest Thorpe haven't carried out sufficient maintenance? This whole 'more time = good, less time = bad' thing has no actual substance to it. Checks are carried out by Thorpe and several outside companies every winter before a ride is allowed any people on it. Rides are not like people requiring a certain amount of sleep before they can function properly.

I'd be interested to know how happy you would be to ride Expedition Everest knowing it hasn't had a proper refurb since it opened 8 years ago.

  3.

However, I am not paying £5 extra to have less than half the park open. I will continue to visit when the park opens fully in march.

The only reason I am considering visiting this week is because of the lack of queues, if the event was busy I doubt annual pass holders would be forking out £5 when they can experience the whole park for free weeks later.

£15-£20 is pretty hefty for only 6 rides open and a show, and £5 is on the urge of being ridiculous for annual pass holders. HOWEVER, due to the good show, relaxed atmosphere and no queues it seems to shape up to be a good day out from what I've heard.

    :)

  4. I'm really worried we won't see anything new for 2015

It will be a year of focusing on events to boost gate figures. Which can be good as it will benefit their image as a resort however I'm not sure its a long term solution. Yes it does need to be done but there should not be anything stopping them from doing events and a new ride.

But thinking like that is how you end up with Storm Surge.

  5.

So less than 4 months until this and still no one really knows what it's going to be about, apart from the fact it looks 'all pretty and stuff'. At this rate it'll probably either be worse than John Carter or the best blockbuster of the decade. But 'cause it's Brad Bird I'm still holding out hope for the latter.

  6. This could well happen but I can only view it as a dreadful move business wise for thorpe and would cost them more money in the long run:

The four lost city flats; Vortex, Rush, Quantum and Zodiac are absoutely knackered and are clearly coming towards the end of their life. To spend extra money to get them running in the cold will not only cost thorpe more money to open them and operate theme however will mean their life span is considerably shorter and in the long run the attractions will have to be placed sooner. Let's face it, thorpe doesn't have a that big budget, and if they do they choose not to use it on investments, the last thing thorpe wants in the near future is their flat rides dying so they have to replace them which is why they spend money on ride maintenance instead.

Opening up the four flats isn't a wise move business wise however it is a possibility.

No idea if any of them will be open or not, but if they were ready having the Lost City flats open for one week would have no effect on the long-term 'lifespan' of any of them.

  7. The Swarm itself is fine, if it's held back by anything it's the batching area design, as well as the whole backwards thing and standard fastrack woes (but less of a problem here with more premium pricing and a higher throughput ride in general). I don't mind backwards though, just the station design never really accommodated for it in the first place. Bigger problems come from relying on rides like Storm Surge, Depth Charge and Samurai to be the major filler rides outside of the top coasters.

  8. Why not just shift normal queues as much as possible so RNR isn't needed?

Weird comparison. With the problems (a lot of which are self-made) they intend Rn'R to solve, pushing staff to get an extra 100 an hour isn't really going to change much. Staff usually attempt high throughputs regardless of which system is being run more for morale-purposes. Bigger issues than that are a) Fastrack allocations b.) Priority passes c) The types of rides they choose to build in the first place.

  9. They would be foolish not to add something. The fungle spot wont see a new ride until after 2016 as its being used as an access point for construction. I think we will see something new, with merlins may opening obsession they still have time to make it. If not we are just seeing a year where their main advertisement is "queue-less park".

The same attitude that created Thorpe's current complete lack of identity.

Not that I'm claiming Rn'R has been completely worked out, a 'queue-less park' is a pretty big advertisement... so what do you propose that you think they still have the time to install this season which would grab the general public's attention more?

  10. What I don't understand from this is where this idea that whole swathes of the park are going to be closed at once, its just not true. Following Space Mountains opening (scheduled for Mid June) pretty much the entire park will be open, subject to the random downtime that rides have as they go through their maintenance which nobody here can predict, and are announced around 3 months ahead of time.

Again I mentioned it was just a risk, I'd heard from somewhere else that the Space refurb might last a bit longer than first suggested and it's opening would run pretty close to the start of the BTM refurb. But of course that might end up being completely wrong!

  11. Must admit, I've heard mixed-positive things at Space Mountain at DLP, but hopefully the upgrade will make it a fantastic experience. Whilst I'll miss out on the ride when I visit in April, it's something I'm looking forward to on a return trip.

Speaking on upgrades, I think until 2027, there will be at least one major ride at a time as I've heard the following attractions are confirmed for major refurbishment and closures.

Space Mountain (happening now) Jan 2015- July 2015

Adventure Isle September 2015- April 2016

Small World July 2015- December 2015

Thunder Mountain December 2015- January 2017

There's even talks of phantom manor & Star Tours getting upgrades, but not sure what's happening there.

I expect the studios marvel retheme wont happen until 2018 at a guess.

The dates of refurbs haven't been confirmed, not even Space's re-opening month. BTM would more likely either close around September/October this year or January next year. But again, speculation...

  12. In addition to what Marc said Adventure Island has no entrance fee and is incredibly accessible. You can come and go as you please and when you do leave you're in the centre of a pretty big seaside town. Means in the summer you can just turn up for a few hours at whatever time and when you've finished what you want to do you're in Southend already. The two aren't really comparable.

  13. There a company that operates theme parks and coasters featured for less than 4 seconds. Not making much sense to me, surley you advertise your best asset. Apart from that the advert seems pretty average.

It makes perfect sense. Best asset would be your opinion, I would argue something like the London Eye is a stronger asset considering it's position as a London icon attraction. If you're trying to advertise diversity why would you only focus on one thing? Not everyone is a fan of rollercoasters and they're trying to advertise to all members of the family who will all have completely different tastes, so focusing the advert on rollercoasters more so than anything else would be off-putting to a massive portion of the market. From the advert you can still clearly see rides are part of their make-up so that part of the market is already taken care of, there really isn't any need for more.

  14. ^ How is this even a thing? She's doing a college project, they're not going up against eachother at the Oscars. No one has doubted the quality or effort put in by electricBill for his own project, and if Amy wanted to include anything on dark rides she'd be perfectly entitled to.

  15. The Hobbit then...

First one decent, second one good, this one... is kind of summarised quite well by the way they keep throwing Lord of the Rings references at you at the end, as if to say 'we know you wish you were actually watching that instead'.

    Sigh.  -_-

  16. Appreciate Interstellar even more on second viewing, IMAX helped of course. I'm still not a major fan of the last 25 minutes, but I think that's more down to it not living up to the previous 2+ hours, but by then I've already been impressed to the point where it just about gets away with it. The docking sequence is probably one of the most exciting and ridiculous pieces of cinema I've seen, goosebumps. Mackenzie Foy will go far. Strong 9/10.
