  • With the 2012 season over and new coaster opportunities over for another year I guess it is time to try and decide how this years new experiences change things. Things also shuffle about with the pass

It has been a long one coming, but after a park like no other it is finally time to update some top 10’s.

Roller Coasters:

1/ Steel Vengeance

2/ Helix

3/ Maverick

4/ Taron

5/ Millennium Force

6/ Shambhala

7/ Wodan

8/ Nemesis

9/ Raptor

10/ Icon

Parks visited:

1/ Europa Park

2/ Cedar Point

3/ Efteling

4/ Phantasialand

5/ Disneyland Paris

6/ Liseberg

7/ Port Aventura

8/ Blackpool Pleasure Beach

9/ Alton Towers

10/ Thorpe Park

Some of you may be shocked and surprised by my choices here, but I can reassure you there is methods In these conclusions.

Everything in a park from location, styling, selection and character is analysed amongst what kind of park it may be. Not every park needs tonnes of thrilling rides or magical theming and details everywhere, they are all different and would be a dull world if they weren’t.

The differences between my top two perhaps elaborate this.

And finally, Cedar Point Coasters ranked from top to bottom (most were ridden at least twice):

1/ Steel Vengeance

2/ Maverick

3/ Millennium Force

4/ Raptor

5/ Rougarou

6/ Top Thrill Dragster

7/ Gate Keeper

8/ Valravn

9/ Magnum XL

10/ Gemini

11/ Wicked Twister

12/ Blue Streak

13/ Corkscrew

14/ Iron Dragon

15/ Cedar Creek Mine (the irony),

Wilderrness Run and Woodstock Express were  not ridden.

1 - Galactica.

2 - Dragon's Fury.

3 - Flight of the Pterosaur

4 - Vampire.

5 - Thirteen.

6 - Cobra (Paultons).

7 - Kobra (Chessie).

8 - Velociraptor.

9 - Spinball Whizzer.

10 - Mias Riding Adventure.

Right then, let's see how this has changed since I've been on most of the rides at Towers and Thorpe (excluding Oblivion, Stealth and Saw)

1. Nemesis - Obvious reasons

2. The Swarm - Veeerrry very close between this and the Smiler. I think I enjoyed Swarm more but they're pretty much level (my shoulders don't enjoy Swarm though)

3. The Smiler - ^

4. Nemesis Inferno - I wasn't convinced at first but after three rides I am. Honestly, these four are very close.

5. Megafobia - This and Wicker Man are pretty much level, Megafobia just about edges it though for it's airtime and length.

6. Wicker Man - ^

7. Galactica - Between this and Dragon's Fury, I like Galactica but not as much as those above.

8. Dragon's Fury - I still love DF. Just like pretty much all the other rides these four are very close.

9. Colossus - If I had been on more big coasters it wouldn't even make it in, not too keen on concussions or breaking my neck.

10. Flight of the Pterosaur - I'm honestly surprised this even makes it in, let alone be on par with Colossus. In all honesty I had just as much if not more fun on Flight than Colossus

Rita doesn't even make it in because everything after the launch I literally find boring.

With three new parks and several new rollercoasters, probably time to show off the new top ten.

1. Nemesis (-)

2. Steel vengeance (NE)

3. Blue fire (-1)

4. Katun (-1)

5. Alpina Blitz (-1)

6. Maverick (NE)

7. Icon (NE)

8. Gatekeeper (NE)

9. Wodan (-4)

10. Behemoth (NE)

The biggest shake up of my top ten in years but a lot of these rides more then justify their placements.

Out of interest, what were the main differences between The Freezer and Asylum that made the former a much stronger maze in your opinion?  I rated Asylum very highly but never got to experience its predecessor.

comment_259938

Baring in mind that I was significantly younger when I did Freezer, the main thing that sticks out in my mind with Freezer is that it had actual different scenes and progression.

Asylum was effectively a corridor, a huge chain mesh section, and another corridor. And don't get me wrong, I get the purpose - an endless chain line maze which seems to go on forever where you're target by loads of people, but you don't know if it's 1 or 100, etc. But it just always felt repetitive for me - nothing exciting or interesting.

Freezer had progression throughout the maze - you had different scenes (even if it was just 'prison bars' or a wall as opposed to mesh), different characters who would have different things to do.  It had a build up. Asylum lacked that for me.

As I say, I see why people loved Asylum, but that sort of scare attraction does little for me.

comment_259956

Well ChiapasC has more or

less covered the bulk of it!!

Essentially, The Asylum was pretty much 85 percent the same as The Freezer with the main difference being the layout was reversed. You’d walk in through The Asylums exit and run out onto the old showcase stage. Theming wise, Freezer was themed to more of a morgue where the dead have come alive whereas Asylum is themed to....well just that!! The Freezer also had dead ends in its first year (I never got to experience that though) aswell as much more smoke used in it.

Apart from that, both of them more or less was the same maze!! Same strobes, same audio (inside and outside!!), same fencing and relied on similar tricks but with different presentation (For example Asylum used hanging clothes and cloth in one scene for you to weave in and out of whereas Freezer used body bags) but Freezer felt better presented than Asylum in that the layout worked better in its original form and there was a bit more theming and different scenes in The Freezer.

Doesnt add anything I know but I’d have Freezer back at the event in a heartbeat!! Easily the most terrifying maze in the events history and it’s been gone since 2004!!

No Dubai on the Worldwide list. You are missing a bit part of the global theme park world.

Dubai at the moment doesn’t massively interest me compared to other places, but I’m sure that will change in the future. The strict rules out there affecting Brits does also put me off a little.

The Orlando park’s for me hold their positions largely down to their significant presence alone, and the fact they are worldwide park ‘icons’.

Magic Kingdom is the busiest and (arguably) most famous park on the planet

Epcot has world showcase and ‘seems’ to be more unique than the rest

Animal Kingdom just looks gorgeous

Hollywood Studios has the original Tower, RNRC and soon Star Wars

Universal Studios- Harry Potter, that is all (amongst the other cool dark rides and Marvel Island)

Busch- features some interesting looking coasters including three B&Ms

Sea World has B&Ms

The rest is probably adequate too.

Ticking these off the bucket list will be a bigger sigh of relief to when Phantasialand bulldozes Temple Of The Nighthawk.

Media propaganda, don't do anything stupid you won't be put in jail. No crime, Waitrose, Costa, M&S, KFC, Pizza &Pasta, it's all very Westernised now. World-class public transport systems and taxi's cheaper than an oyster fayre. I wouldn't be put off going to Dubai with the worry of breaking a rule.

Maybe you might be put into jail for investigating the country's security systems otherwise I wouldn't worry at all.

I won't hide my sexuality to ride a few rollercoasters. Being flogged, imprisoned, tortured or murdered just to ride Flying Aces isn't worth it in anybody's book.

People who overlook out-dated social practises just to ride rollercoasters =/

Went out to visit my sister, she hasn't been stabbed yet or put in jail despite being British and out there for four years. Rollercoasters were a bonus despite being too tall for many of them. Also saw no crime, no pickpocketers, and even no litter. Strange too that they have every British store you can think of M&s Waitrose, Costa, Hard rock, Starbucks, KFC you name it they have it.
