  1. In my defence I'm not just a wimp! 😃 Goudrix has been retracked since I visited and supposedly is immeasurably better than it was before. Imagine your second ride magnified. I'm not going to forgive that contraption its sins.

Sad to hear you didn't like Zeus, I thought it was incredible. Hopefully it's just you having bad taste and not that they've let it deteriorate!

  2. I couldn't really justify the hotel cost when compared to the guesthouses which are so convenient and cheap, did love what I saw of them though. The bars and restaurants that we tried in the hotels were all lovely, I certainly will consider them when I return if I'm feeling flush, but as I seemed to be able to use all the facilities as an outsider I'd happily go back on the cheap again!

Silver Star does seem to get a lot of criticism. For me it's the best hyper I've done, but then again I only have the Big One currently as a comparison.

I massively prefer The Big One, and I'm no fan that either!

  4. For my part, I continue to occasionally visit Merlin parks because they do have some great thrilling coasters which I want to ride. I can't help wanting to ride them and there really isn't much of an alternative that is reasonably accessible.

Having said that, Chessington hasn't been good enough for me to considering visiting for about 4 years, Alton's reduced line up last year wasn't enough to entice me up the M1, I doubt the coming year will either but I don't suppose I'll be able to resist the woodie.

I can't help but enjoy myself on most rides, I find it fun and that feeling in that moment can't really be lost. For may years though, whenever I'm at a Merlin park, I feel like I enjoy myself in spite of what what the park do rather than because of it. It's like the powers that be actively try and piss me off and sap the fun and escapism out of what they have already created in the way they run and develop the parks. It's a shame.

Looking for the positives in the parks (and in life!) is a good idea; there are things to enjoy, things to be entertained by, small improvements which may have been made. I think it wrong to particularly celebrate these little things though while the very core of the parks is rotting away.

Sounds like  Tonnere De Zeus has a lot to live upto then when I visit (possibly summer 2017), especially with the good reviews it's been getting.

It will exceed those expectations, whatever they are.

I'll hold out 'till the new ride. If it's a firechaser-a-like I'll be well happy, that thing looks so much fun.

  6. And I think this is where Merlin need to think about their priorities - shareholders, or securing the future of their parks?

In the longer term these are serviced by the same thing; being good at what they do. Investment in the parks, for the visitors, is an investment for the shareholders too as the punters come, and come back, spending their money to give to the shareholders.

  7. The Smiler incident, and the desperately poor year overall for our parks, can go one of two ways.

    - It could give them the shot in the arm they clearly need to strive to actually provide a good day out, giving people a reason to go to (and more importantly, return to) their parks.

    - Or they could retract, pull away and let themselves meet the low expectations people now have. Not invest for the future, but live in the bad times of now.

The expected closures, of rides and for days, do not make me think they are going to go about the coming season with any positivity, and it'll just become harder and harder for themselves.

  8. It does look amazing, and goes onto the ever growing 'one day' list.

It must be time for the UK to address its lack of Mack, anyone know how they compare cost wise to the omnipresent B&M/Inamin/Gurst trio that seem to have had a monopoly here between them in recent years? There must be a reason no one has gone for a big Mack here.

  9. Great read, I'm glad the SLC never came off!

I don't think the cause of the fire has ever been confirmed, rumours of the cigarette butt have always been about I've never seen it reported as fact and I've looked quite a bit. Would be interesting to know what actually happened, or if they even got to the bottom of it themselves. Fire investigations are often inconclusive, what with most of the evidence being on fire.
