Jax
That's a shame. Guessing I won't be able to ride it on Friday then :/

Coaster_Contrarian
It's been down for an awfully long time with no communication from the park besides being closed for maintenance, suggesting some sort of urgent fix. I hope they get it open soon, as it is the best drop tower in the UK.
planenut
Apparently this is one of possibly three rides that, due to being older, requiring parts that need replacing though there is no company making the parts. As elsewhere, if a ride is unique even though that may only be in dimensions in the infrastructure, the cost of repairs becomes exhorbitant. The same reason we lost Slammer. Inferno
That would be a real shame to think that Detonator could be on borrowed time if it's a struggle to find parts. It's an incredible drop tower. Hopefully all will be sorted soon and they can continue to source bits. I bet many of Thorpe's rides are starting to hit these sort of troubles now at about the same time - many of the flats were built within a few years of each other. planenut
That was the way Drayton Manor's Apocalypse went. That was a shame with the options of floorless, sitting or standing, and at 177', it was brilliant, Detonator's drop is 115'.
Matt 236
Let’s hope they can find/order a replacement part. Detonator in my eyes is amongst the best drop towers out there and large ones have become a bit of a dying breed in the UK especially since the loss of Apocalypse. At 23 she still packs a punch. MattyMoo
Agree with all of the above. I don't always ride Detty, but when I do, I remember what a beast it is - and every time, I find that height intimidating, still.

(Scream at Heide Park is my fav - the drop seems to go on forever).

I've not been to Heide Park for years and I think we spent most of the time riding wood; Scream is a 338' drop and must be brilliant. Benin
I prefer Det over a lot of the bigger drop towers because once you've hit terminal velocity with at least 1/2 the drop left it kinda loses it for me. Det is quick and forceful. Just how I prefer it.
LK_
If it does end up going in the future I feel an Intamin Sky Jump would be a nice replacement (maybe not in the same area), like the one at grona lund
Marc
I wonder if it starts to get hard to get parts for Detonator we could see it get replaced with a new taller drop tower? Agree with the comments detonator is one of the better drop towers, although now it’s had its pistons which push you down removed there is a bit of a noticeable difference to how it used it be back in the day. What with Stealth and now Hyperia I wonder if they could push their luck abit and get permission to build a 200ft + tower.
Cal
Detonator was always one of my favourite rides at Thorpe back in the day, but don't find it anywhere near as forceful as it used to be since the pistons have been removed. Anyone else find the new voiceover really annoying too? I personally can't see Detonator going in the near future. This is the first extended downtime its had in a long time, and its very reliable overall. Would love to see a taller tower replace it when that time comes though.
