Hyperia - New for 2024 (Ride thread)

This year I decided to track all of my rides on Hyperia, over the course of the season, I managed to experience 92 rides. It is interesting to note that it took me my 33rd ride to get the front row (and 34th to get my other missing row which was Row 4), and then by the end of the season the front was my second most ridden row behind the back row.IMG_5499.thumb.jpeg.c14dceab67b6b69572f1c4b7db2387ca.jpeg

Looked pretty close to stalling yesterday during testing yesterday, 8 mins in. I really hope they've ironed out the issues it was having last season and they can get it open on time every day.

I'm surprised they haven't added a front row queue in the station too (which they said was coming later last season) surely that would be really easy to implement?

Oh dear, that doesn’t seem very promising at all does it.

Fingers crossed it’s not going to have another year of terrible reliability and multiple stalls 😬

I had hoped last year’s endless problems were down to it being so late and needing to just be open, with things being sorted during the closed season…

Me too 🤷‍♂️ I noticed the scaffolding is still at the side of the station holding the test dummies too. I would've assumed that was a temporary solution too ...

Does anybody know whether they'll play it safe and not open it tomorrow or.....I'm going to crashout if I can't ride it lol

Don't see why it wouldn't be open unless its having issues or wind is too high, weather looks fine for tomorrow.

really funny chair, really funny chair, wobble wrang, bobble brang, really funny gantry, really funny lights wheeeeeeeeeee, but we're spendng all of it on a one that doesn't bit.

oh OH there is trouble, oh they don't like it anymore, rains won't stop but cold weathers will, my precious the jewel is mine, all mine, they'll get you in there, they'll get you alright!

tldr the ride is ****** because the ride is not working. a bit, but the e scooter is too expensive for the rules to say you can't ride it. and soon they will all know, even the salad servers, the wrecking ball is coming, not for the whole thing, but trouble is a foot

Happy to translate Parms nonsense for everyone:

This seems like a stream-of-consciousness or playful, abstract writing that’s blending humor, frustration, and a hint of chaos. Let me break it down:

1. **"Really funny chair, really funny chair, wobble wrang, bobble brang, really funny gantry, really funny lights wheeeeeeeeeee"** - This part seems to be describing something amusing or whimsical, possibly a ride or piece of machinery, that’s not functioning in a typical or smooth manner (like something wobbling, bobbling, or spinning).

2. **"But we're spending all of it on a one that doesn't bit."** - Here, it sounds like there's frustration or a sense of waste, spending energy, money, or resources on something that doesn’t "work" (it "doesn't bit" could be an intentional play on "doesn't fit" or "doesn't work").

3. **"Oh OH there is trouble, oh they don't like it anymore, rains won't stop but cold weathers will"** - This could suggest that the situation has gotten worse, people are unhappy, and external circumstances (like bad weather) are adding to the problems. The rains won't stop, but maybe the cold will bring an end to the trouble or chaos.

4. **"My precious the jewel is mine, all mine"** - A reference to Gollum from *The Lord of the Rings*, possibly emphasizing obsession or desire for something, perhaps a metaphor for the ride or situation in question.

5. **"They'll get you in there, they'll get you alright!"** - This might be referring to people or forces that will eventually get the situation under control or cause some form of resolution, possibly with a hint of menace.

6. **"TLDR: The ride is ****** because the ride is not working. A bit, but the e-scooter is too expensive for the rules to say you can't ride it."** - The TL;DR seems to be a summary that the main issue is that the ride isn't working properly, and there’s frustration about the costs (e-scooter being expensive but still being usable within certain rules).

7. **"And soon they will all know, even the salad servers, the wrecking ball is coming, not for the whole thing, but trouble is a foot."** - This suggests impending trouble or chaos, something big is coming (a "wrecking ball"), but not necessarily to destroy everything. The "salad servers" could be a metaphor for people involved in the situation, hinting that everyone will soon realize what’s going on.

Overall, it seems like a colorful and exaggerated commentary about a malfunctioning ride or system, with elements of frustration, confusion, and impending resolution or conflict. The metaphorical and whimsical language makes it playful but also hints at deeper concerns or frustrations with the situation.

Hopefully that helps everyone with his gobble gibberish goop.

The primary issue with Hyperia is that it does not like running empty.

When full, either with guests or dummies, the ride runs fine. Maybe a bit slow for the outerbank with only a couple of seats filled, but yknow, that's the point.

But when empty, it just crawls. The difference between an empty train and even a quarter full one is astounding. I've never seen a ride be quite so chalk and cheese in that regard.

Obviously that's led Thorpe to running very few empty trains, and even tweaking their usual post-breakdown procedure it seems. That's how big a deal this is. And especially for morning checks, it slows things down.

I don't quite know what they'll do moving forward. The risk of a stall seems to be ever prevalent with empty trains, and that's something either Thorpe have to live with, or they'll have to change. The questions are, how would they change it, and how liable are Thorpe to pay for those changes.

Could they do something to the lift hill speed based on weight? Would that have an impact?

Yeah that’s a good thought - manually override the lift speed when there’s an empty train.

Either that or they make some sort of retrofitted water ballast tanks under the trains somehow that can be filled with a hose pipe and easily emptied? That’s got to at least be better than loading dummies…

Not great though is it having a bodge fix like these

Loading and unloading dummies every day for ever more isn’t very good on a brand new ride though.

Removing track and replacing it with a slightly lower  outer bank in the ultimate solution I suppose. Huge faff and expense though isn’t it - although you could argue it’s worth it if the ride can then run properly for decades afterwards 🤷‍♂️

The lift hill already has “boost mode” which speeds up as it gets to the top to try give it some extra momentum when it’s running empty / in engineering mode.

As mentioned above they could re profile that part of the track, although I suspect that could then mess up the stall?

Or I don’t know how practical it may actually be but some sort of lsm, either to boost the train slightly if running slow or to recover a stalled train to save the faff of getting a crane in etc.

Not sure if adding weight to the train is possible I know there’s a b&m out there with a weighted zero car which had stalling issues, but not sure how that would then react with a train full of people also!

It is quite astounding that the idea of Hyperia stalling wasn't factored into the design. Voltron and Mandrill Mayhem take account for this possibility. So either they wanted to take the risk, it was cheaper to not add LSM's to recover the train or it was never considered that it could...

To be fair, those rides listed are themselves launch coasters, and so by their nature can possibly stall if the launches aren't powerful enough. I can't think of any lift hill coaster that had recovery LSMs.

One would assume they didn't think it possible to stall, or that it was so unlikely it would barely happen.

Oh my god it's so obvious, I completely missed what linked those two compared to Hyperia.

Dumb Mark.

(I'll consul myself that Voltron valleyed in an area with no recovery launch and leave it at that).

To be fair Thorpe do normally keep closed rides on the app unlike some of the other merlin parks, Stealth for example was kept on the app even though it was planned to be closed on the Sunday. Same for Hyperia during its issues last year.

Yeah I noticed the change in post breakdown procedure on pass holder day. I wonder if this is for all breakdowns though or just certain issues?

It is a quite disappointing to see the continuation of Hyperia opening late and hope that can be sorted. Really isn't a great customer experience having their new coaster opening over an hour late daily. I get that its more time consuming in the mornings with the dummys etc but they need a permanent solution or start testing earlier.

Positive news, looking at queue-times it doesn't look like it had any shutdowns today so looks like they've sorted the issues causing all the stoppages.

I was actually thinking just the other day if Hyperia had a different post-breakdown ritual, becuase come to think of it I don't think I've ever (or if I have, it's probably literally only been one train) seen empty trains go round the track after a breakdown.

The question of how Thorpe could fix the reliability issue is one that really interests me - LSMs where the trim brackets are is the most obvious answer to me, but I'm not sure how possible that would be to retrofit LSMs into a bracket not intended for LSMs and that's not even taking into consideration the fact that the trains probably aren't capable of utilising LSMs, which would mean yet ANOTHER retrofit which would likely cause a whole other stream of problems.

Realistically, shortening the height of the outerbank inversion thing is probably easiest and would have the least amount of moving parts... but also can't really see the park opting for this either.

I just reckon it will continue to be operated the way it is at the minute pretty much indefinitely - it's a pain in the arse, but at least it somewhat gets the job done without costing the park any extra money.
